Reelin’ in the Years – 2013

Well, it’s 2013 and I’m 51 years old going on 15. Seems my interest in pop is back full force, especially EDM. This was the year Avicii (RIP) had a monster hit with “Wake Me Up.” But there were several other really good EDM tunes this year. One could even argue that EDM peaked this year before going into a bit of a decline.

I don’t know about you but I’m really sick and tired of that pumping sidechained bass that became a staple of EDM. I learned how to do it in my home bedroom studio, and posted a song or two with side-chained bass. But I wouldn’t bother now.

So looking back the two tunes that stand out most are “Wake Me Up” and Lana Del Ray’s “Summertime Sadness.”

For my 2013 favorite I choose “Wake Me Up.” Avicii was an inspiration as I tried in my middling years to learn the complexities of electronic music production. I’m still working on it today, but Avicii mastered it in his early twenties.

Sigh. There’s an old song called “Suicide is Painless” but that’s not true. Many people were affected by Avicii’s untimely death. And I think this – along with other recent suicides – is a wake-up call for society. There’s more to life than fame and making tons of money.

Myself, I felt the lyrics for this song were somewhat prophetic. For Avicii it is “all over” for him down here. But my faith says he has awakened to a better reality than the worldly one that gave him so much grief.

Some might find this song a bit hokey or contrived. Especially old skool types. I get that. But at the same time, I appreciate how Avicii was trying to break out of the mold that EDM was falling into. He often said that EDM was becoming too formulaic, and I think he had a point.

This song is his attempt to synthesize Country Music and EDM. I like it, even if it is a bit cheesy.
