Firebrand

This is a pretty old tune that I originally sang. The first recording was done in the late 1980s / early 1990s on a Fostex 4-track tape with a Yamaha mini keys keyboard, an Ibanez digital delay and a couple of foot pedals. Despite the limited tech, the end result was pretty good. (I might transfer it from tape and post it some day for interests sake).

This time around I didn’t feel like singing so just did the main melody with a synth line. And I gave it a sorta i Robot update. Digital age…

But still, I left in retro “Disco Toms” and California-style lead guitar. So it’s a bit of old and new.

All the VSTi plugins are freeware. Some were slightly modified with other paid-for VSTs that come with Reaper, which itself is a very modestly priced DAW (digital audio workstation).

Variety Of Sound

One of the best freeware sites for VST FX. I use NastyDLA mkII (a digital delay that works with audio and midi files) often. I’ve compared it to some of the big boys and imo it’s every bit as good. Much lighter on resources too.

DrumTroop – Free EDM, HipHop, Old School Drum Rompler

Hard to believe this is free! Just checked it out and it works great in Reaper. Grab it while it’s free.

hymn for the earth

Here’s a little jingle i wrote years ago in india… originally for guitar. i’ve tried different versions over the years. this one is influenced a bit by david bowie.. specifically, i was thinking of bowie while doing the little drummer boy rat-a-tat snare on my midi keyboard.

i forgot to humanize the kick drum, so it’s all the same velocity and “quantized” timing on the grid. but the rest is pretty loose, so i think it’s okay… haven’t been motivated yet to fix the kick..

Orion’s belt

A tune I’ve been working on over the past few days. More like a sketch than a finished product. Might add a bit more something to it. Not sure just what yet… maybe some distant talking with the ol’ telephone wire FX. We’ll see…

Back on the Train (blast from the past!)

Here’s a tune I wrote back in the 80s! My partner had just moved out and this creative outlet started spouting all sorts of tunes. So… it’s young, not too sophisticated… but part of me. I might do a version with real guitar. The guitar sounds here are from VST plugins. I love to cheat! MIDI is so much more fun than stringed instruments (tho’ one guitar is a sampled Strat). As for the vocals… well, I AM rusty. Haven’t been signing much lately. And when my pipes do open up, it’s usually later at nite. So I had to speak/sing into the mic to not awaken anyone in the house. 🙂

Sunbathing on Zeta 3

Testing out a promising new freeware program called LMMS, recently been made available for Windows. I don’t really know how to use it. And it seems to have some limitations. But I like what it does do. Or rather, what I could figure out in a few hours!
