Red barn

Red Barn via Flickr

Here’s one I took last summer, near Port Hope Ontario. This was a second attempt. The first time around a stunning sunset was hitting the barn, surrounding fields and water tower.

Much to my chagrin on returning home, I found that my SD card had munched it. I think the problem was that I either switched the card among cameras without reformatting. Or maybe I did a Windows format instead of an in-camera format.

In any case, I lost the first photo. So this one was a retry, taken several weeks later. Instead of stunning sunset we have haze and mist.

Oh well. It’s still okay.

Ursa Major, Ursa Minor (Sketch)

A quick sketch of a melody/tune that came to me after seeing the big and little dippers in the dark countryside, by Lake Ontario… I may evolve it some day.. The two musical phrases are seven notes each, just as there are seven stars in each of the constellations…

While looking at the stars I noticed that the big dipper is, of course, bigger but the little dipper is brighter.

I love looking at a clear night sky devoid of light pollution. Finding a place without light pollution (sadly) seems almost impossible these days. But this location was pretty good. Just one small spot emanating from Cobourg Ontario, a town that used to be a hot spot for wealthy Americans back in the day.

Living in Toronto one can see 2 or 3 stars on a good night! Well, maybe a few more. But it is pretty appalling. So whenever I get a chance, which isn’t too often, I take to the country and reconnect with the ancient art of the night sky.

halloween is coming

At the end of the summer I stumbled across this old barn on a country drive. It was a fantastic sunset with a rippled effect over the fields. I took several shots but all the files came out corrupted, probably cos I didn’t format the card properly.

So I go back and take this. Nowhere near the original scene, even tho it’s the same scene, just several weeks later. Moral of the story. You can’t step in the same field twice (from Heraclitus, “you can’t step into the same river twice”.. i.e. change is the name of the game).

Here’s another shot taken with a SONY (first was a Canon; both have been edited for contrast):

summer’s end…

Felt really sterile in the city today, so we took to the countryside. After this photo, I took some (seemingly) amazing shots of an old barn with the setting sun on it. But when I got home, all I saw was funny squiggles and empty folders where the pics should have been. The joys of digital photography… :-/

went for a country drive yesterday… turned off this road to clean the windshield as it was getting dark.. turns out the road’s sole existence is to test paint strips! it’s a dead end… or is it..?
