Was Googling Amsterdam and found this. Funny!
Last night I was listening to two keyboardists whom I’d like to get more familiar with. Dave Brubeck and Bill Evans. Doing a library search for Brubeck, I came across an lp called “Time Out.” When I tried to place an order for that CD through the library, I got a notice that my online session was about to time out!
So what are the odds?
To me, it was a funny synchronicity. Synchronicity is a term coined by the Swiss depth psychologist and medical psychiatrist C. G. Jung to denote the occurrence of what he believed were *meaningful* coincidences. This coincidence did have a meaning for me. But it is too private to divulge!
I also did my doctorate on Jung’s concept of synchronicity. Anyone interested click here.
So it took me a while to get around to watching this movie. I suppose the promo image for Donnie Darko was a bit of a turn off. Someone in a hoodie looking ominous with fire in the background. I imagined it was like Firestarter (which I haven’t seen… but you get the idea).
All I knew about Donnie was that it had something to do with alleged psychic abilities and time travel, and that it was a bit dark. Even the opening scenes are a bit dark (exposure-wise). This made me think I’d be suffering through the grainy bummer of old movie prints that aren’t remastered. But I persevered and after a few minutes was pleasantly surprised. In fact, Donnie kept growing on me, right up to the grand, freaked out finale.
Set in 1988 but filmed in 2001, this is an interesting time loop in itself. The past looking at the past. On the whole the retro fit is done well. Rounded CRT TVs. VHS tapes. That era. The only anachronism I might have detected is the Panasonic Ball Radio. I owned one of those, and that was the 1970s, not the late 80s. Oh well. I guess you could say the character who owns the radio gets it from her parents.
This film touches on several key issues without going overboard on any of them. Time travel, premonition, the idea of mental illness, bullying, racism, child pornography, the hypocrisy of some self-help gurus. All these provocative themes are wrapped up into a tight ball that steadily unravels as the film progresses.
The acting is pretty much fabulous throughout. I didn’t see any weak performances and lots of strong ones.
Rather than break it down (you can get that at more conventional sites), I suggest watching this film with as few preconceptions as possible. Wikipedia helps make sense of it. But I wouldn’t read that until after seeing this skirmish into darkness, light and emerging new ideas about space, time and alternate universes.
Sometimes mystery is good, and spelling it all out beforehand can detract from the magic.
I do volunteer work at allexperts.com. Not too long ago I received an interesting question from someone claiming they can predict deaths with great reliability.
Due to copyright restrictions, I can’t reblog the question and my answer here. But I can link to it.
Okay, this is a true story. It just happened. Today I felt it was time to get the outdoor Christmas lights out. So I went down to the basement to get them. After a few minutes of looking in the usual storage place, I decided I’d outsmarted myself and put them in some new place that I couldn’t remember. I looked and looked and looked and looked. And then I looked some more! Still no lights.
In the process of looking, I realized the basement really needed a cleanup. There were old shirts I’d been keeping as rags and old boxes and bags. I cleaned it all up. I got the snow shovels out. And put the rakes away. I sorted through other old things that could be recycled and thrown out. And I found a digital photo frame that I wanted to run my Christmas pics through.
I figured that the lights would appear once I got the basement in order. But they still were missing. So I went upstairs to the closet in the living room. I cleaned it out. Still no lights. Then I went to the closets on the second floor. And I cleaned them out. Still no lights!
At this point I pretty well gave up. Maybe I took them to Value Village (like Goodwill and the Sally Ann) last summer, I thought. Maybe I donated them by mistake. But that didn’t make much sense because I don’t really remember going to Value Village last summer. And I bought this set of lights last winter.
By this point I said to my Mom, whom I live with, “Well, at least some good has come out of this. The house is good and clean!”
Then, taking one last trip downstairs to get my coffee that I’d left there, I was stunned. Sitting right there, at the bottom of the stairs in a tidy clump were the Christmas lights!
Now the funny thing is, when I was cleaning, my mom kept saying that they might be in a clump to the left of the basement stairs. I looked in that area 3 or 4 times, and couldn’t see the lights. But that’s exactly where I finally found them. And it seemed like they literally appeared out of thin air, after I’d done all the cleaning.
Did God “hide” them from me so I’d be motivated to do all the housecleaning? Did I subconsciously block them out while moving them around? It’s just too weird! But it all turned out well. 🙂
Heading says it all. Here’s the last four Q&A’s I’ve done at Allexperts.com, where I volunteer in several categories.
I love volunteering. It’s a great way to stay on top of a wide variety of issues and also to see what real people are concerned about (instead of just academics or New Agey publishers).
Another question and answer at allexperts.com, where I volunteer. This time, a questioner asks me what I think about a hand print that appeared on their leg.
This might sound strange, but it’s amazing how many questions I get like this. And the questioners almost always seem to be sane, rational people. Not just storytellers, wannabe fiction writers, or nuts.
