Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech (abridged) set to original soundtrack… my challenge is to use entirely free VST plugins.. so theoretically, anyone with a half decent computer could do something like this.

I’ve been experimenting with compressors, limiters, EQ, and expanders.. learning as i go along… would like to get a clean, balanced but also punchy version by MLK day (Jan 20). Can’t really tell how it’s going to sound until I upload it here, because SoundCloud takes the wav file and renders it into mp3. At least, I think it does… 🙂

Thanks to those who liked my previous versions. I really appreciate the feedback. Negative feedback would be welcome too, as long as it talks about the music and isn’t just a bunch of expletives!

I had to delete the earlier versions. I’ve learned so much in the past few days that I can better see (and hear) how to improve it. This mix seems a bit too boxy. I was trying to level it out. Maybe went a bit too far. Not sure. Will have to take a drive and listen to it then. Everything becomes clear behind the wheel…

  1. Thank you for the likes. It’s encouraging. Since posting this I realized the drum track had to come down at the beginning. I actually drew more detailed volume curves for the entire drum track. That, of course, changed the rest of the mix. So I had to basically redo the levels for most other instruments. Still remaining are the levels for the little riff that sounds sorta 70sish. The first has to come down but… well I can’t remember… some are okay and some are not. It’s not a big deal to fix but I’m sort of saturated with this project. Hearing it so many times and you not only lose perspective but also get…. bored? No, maybe it’s not that. I just feel there are certain times when I can do this. I have to be in the “music mood” as it were. And right I’m in the blogging mood. Cleaning up some admin. stuff, making sure I’m getting back to all followers, whom I also appreciate very much!

    I do plan, however, to get the final mix out by MLK day! And then after that, onto the next project… with a whole bunch more producing/mastering knowledge under my belt.

    (I can see that this comment has turned into a blog post, so I’m going to post it!)
