Remembering Bill Hewitt

Bill Hewitt was forced to leave broadcasting in the early 80s while only 53 years due to a blood infection.

With the recent passing of sportscaster Bob Cole, a leading TV sports network paid tribute to this popular Canadian announcer, which was very nice but much to my dismay the segment completely omitted in its ‘history’ Bill Hewitt, the son of the more famous Foster Hewitt.

For Torontonians growing up in the 60s and 70s, Bill Hewitt was THE VOICE of the Leafs on Wednesday and Saturday night TV. And I think it’s a shame he was overlooked the other night in the otherwise fitting tribute to Cole.

When Bill replaced his father on TV, Foster still did Sunday night games on CKFH radio. Both were a joy to listen to. This video should bring back some heartwarming memories for old-school Leaf Fans!
