At the feet of the Son

Image via Tumblr

After a downtown Mass I spied this prayer card and almost took it. But then I though, no no, that’s just not right. Some sweet soul left it here and it belongs at the foot of the statue where it was placed. So I took this photo, instead. Turned out way nicer than just the card by itself.

The statue is this old, slightly beat up statue of Christ with an open heart. It always seems to look away from me, as if I’m doing something wrong. But it’s probably just the positioning. That, and the fact that it’s on a stand, much higher than floor level.

Today I felt like I did the right thing by not taking this card home with me.

Easter’s gone but not the calories…

Yep, that’s right. My new banner was taken on Easter Monday. It’s a wonderful time to go to Mass. Not crowded at all. And a really nice drive downtown without the usual, crazed traffic.

This particular church, St. Michael’s Cathedral, is under renovation, and has been for quite a while.

Anyhow, Easter is gone but not the calories. Am I the only one who picked up an extra inch around the midsection over Easter?

I bet not… 🙂

Good Friday… moon reflecting in a puddle on the driveway… 2:30 a.m.

I went out to do some late night food shopping. Supermarket was closed. But I noticed this moon in a puddle on the driveway. In some strange way, I felt it was appropriate for Good Friday.

Save the last Mass for me

Image via Tumblr

Here I am at St. Michael’s Cathedral yesterday. It’s the last daily Mass of 2013. I like ordinary (sometimes called “mid-week”) masses because, as you can see, it’s not so crowded and there’s more room to breathe… They’re also shorter. The Sunday Mass can be nice. But generally, I prefer mid-week masses. They’re sweet and contemplative.

Anyhow, here’s another old-style cellphone shot. The pic quality is substandard, of course, but I like this old cell phone for a lot of reasons. It’s so tiny that nobody hardly realizes I’m taking a picture. The screen is about an inch wide, if that. This makes composing a bit of a challenge. But it’s good for quick, discrete shots. And church is one place where you don’t want to stand out.

What stuck me visually here was the extensive metal scaffolding (maybe a bit more clear in the original). The old cathedral is being renovated, I think primarily for safety reasons. And the masses just keep going, amid the construction, which is sort of cool. One night I was there and all the back pews had been temporarily pulled. So there was this big open square where people just stood. I like that. I like breaks from the old routine.

Happy New Year, Everyone!

Steal My Show

Here’s a nice tune by Toby Mac. I think the video is good too. I like the underwater motif.

I’m getting a bit bored of Christian pop these days. I guess life’s changes have taken me more into jazz – especially Chick Corea – and dance. But this tune still rings a bell, as it were. I’m certainly not bored of Christ! Just the sort of formulaic way the Christian rockers have fallen into depicting his story. As the Canadian folkie Bruce Cockburn once put it, if the music’s no good, the message, no matter how good, doesn’t really get across.
