‘Petite Picasso’

Finally… someone/something truly interesting! Here’s a woman who’s being hailed as the ‘Petite Picasso.’

BSG Razor – Way better than I expected

Battlestar Galactica: Razor – Trailer / Preview

Let’s face it. Galactica peaked for a while and then got increasingly lame. So I only had a mild interest when I saw the ads for Razor. But I did watch it. And I’m glad I did. All expectations surpassed. Just like the ‘old’ Galactica Re-imagined before it got all bloated out of shape.

Don’t miss this one (if you like Galactica, that is…). The new character Kendra Shaw (played by Hong Kong-born actor Stephanie Jacobsen) is nothing short of fantastic. Jacobsen charges right into the Galactica scene as if she’d been there a very long time. Impressive, to say the least. And Admiral Cane (remember Ensign Roe from Star Trek TNG?) is pretty good too (even if her hair is a bit different from her previous appearance in the episode Pegasus, which is supposed to be the same time period as Razor).

As for the old cast, they seem to be getting a bit bored with it all. Kara Thrace just doesn’t have the pluck. Admiral Adama is still solid but not quite as soulful as before, as if he’s thinking about his swimming pool while competently going through the motions… And Apollo, well, even he isn’t quite as sparkling as usual.

The cylon blonde (played by Tricia Helfer), however, is far more convincing than before. At least one of the old crew got better with time… even if she is a cylon!

But what I’m wondering is why they don’t give actor Sebastian Spence a fair chance? He played Cade Foster in the cult classic First Wave. And I thought that was a great show (in a campy sort of way). So far I’ve only seen Spence smile and a mutter a word or two on Galactica…

Anyhow, let’s hope that Razor portends the upcoming 4th season of Galactica. For a series that was getting pretty soft, Razor restores the edge.

Trees

I was at another blog earlier and came across an interesting post about trees. It reminded me of the old Joyce Kilmer poem.

Trees

I THINK that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the sweet earth’s flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

Joyce Kilmer {1886-1918}

Do you read?

Once in a while I just max out on the web with all its bells and whistles and have to get back to the simplicity and peace of good old fashioned books. The other day I was downtown and picked up a really nice little gem that I’d recommend to anyone interested in actually thinking about religion.

The Science of Religion & the Sociology of Knowledge: Some Methodological Questions by Ninian Smart (1973).

Jeremy Rifkin Lecture

Futurist Jeremy Rifkin says we should let the machines speed up but stay the same as human beings. The problem with this view, in my opinion, is that humanity must also evolve. I believe our species has a bit more potential – and perhaps responsibility – than to only become ‘content’ and evolutionarily stagnant. Mouse in the house!

mousebox1.jpgUnbelievable as it may seem, we spotted a mouse in the house last night. It was quite upsetting. My first reaction was to go to night Mass as it had already been a busy day and the mouse in the house was just a bit too much.

Anyhow, I came home after Mass and decided I’d deal with the mouse today. Who knows, there could be an entire family of mice.

Now, I’ve always been a nature-lover and generally kind to animals that I don’t eat. So today I phoned up Pet Smart to ask about harmless mousetraps. I didn’t know if they existed or not. But I was hoping. They sent me to Home Depot where I found this fantastic looking black box with a double opening for only 10 bucks! Amazing. So I’m going to try it tonight.

Let’s hope it works and this little mouse picks up my good intention and walks into the harmless box so I can put him/her outside where s/he belongs.

No more bad mouse karma for me!

A little free-market humor!

Little Feat – Rock ‘n’ roll doctor

Embedding has been ‘disabled by request’ for this one so I’ll just link to it. Little Feat isn’t exactly a household name but musicians tend to respect them… Lowell George (lead vocals) reminds me a bit of Jim Morrison of the Doors. Different but the same kind of tragic brilliance. They both died young, I think due to alcoholism, stardom (…something like that).

If you want to feel real nice… ask the rock ‘n’ roll doctor’s advice…
